Christine Hellyar was born in Taranaki, and now lives and works in Auckland. She has been sculpting since 1966 when she studied at Elam Art School in Auckland.
Materials used include found objects, latex, clay, wood, fabric and bronze. Her works are included in the collections of many institutions in Aotearoa, including Te Papa,the Dowse, Govett Brewster, Manawatu Art Gallery and the Waikato Art Museum, as well as in many private collections.
She has also made large collections of drawings, principally of the native plants of New Zealand. Many are still available for sale in the gallery.
